A story in color begins today – and we are starting strong.
Fresh off the heels of It’s Raining Men (because apparently, I can’t stop talking about Balenciaga Men’s Day bags 😅), we’re stepping out of April’s downpour and into May’s bloom. We’ve dried off, regrouped, and decided to fully lean into the season. If April was all rain, May brings the flowers. 💐
This is Part I of a two-part series, unfolding over eight days of color. Think of it as a slow-burn palette drop: one shade a day, one bag a day, one tiny clue at a time. By the end, you’ll see where this is going…and yes, it’s worth the wait.

Day 1 – Bouton d’Or
The first light in the palette.💛
If sunshine had a handbag cousin, it would be this one. S/S 2008 Bouton d’Or is noticeably brighter in person than the Balenciaga color charts ever suggested – because of course it is. Yellow Bal bags love to show up uninvited and steal the whole scene. ☀️
Finding one in excellent condition? Practically a sport. This one? A gold-metal contender. 🥇
F/W 2007 is the last fully confirmed year of chèvre, and there’s ongoing debate in the Bal community about whether S/S 2008 still used leftover hides. I tend to believe it did – the leather on this bag has that familiar early-era bounce – but that’s my observation, not gospel. What is certain: early Balenciaga chevre is known for its unique chewiness, softness, and lightweight strength. Chèvre really is the GOAT – literally and figuratively – and this bag is out here proving it. 🐐

Pommier literally means apple tree in French, which feels just right for this shade — fresh, crisp, and very “new growth.” The Agneau leather keeps it looking freshly picked, all soft and slouchy like it’s been warming in the sun. If Bouton d’Or was the sunshine, F/W 2009 Pommier is the first leaf that pops up and says, “I’ll take it from here.” 🌱

Day 3 – Apple Green
After spending yesterday with Pommier, it feels fitting to turn to one of its older relatives – S/S 2005 Apple Green, a shade that helped define the early Balenciaga palette. If Pommier was the tender new leaf, Apple Green is the vibrant, fully formed counterpart that arrived seasons earlier, already confident in its place on the tree. 🍏
This shade is unmistakably tied to that golden era of Balenciaga design – unforgettable, crisp, saturated, and bright in a way that still feels modern decades later. It’s no surprise this shade remains one of the most sought-after greens in the archive.
And just when things feel their brightest, the next shade takes a sweeter turn.

Day 4 – Bubblegum
A bloom with a sweeter edge.
After a few days of crisp greens, today’s shade feels like a sugar rush. 🍬Bubblegum has always been one of those Bal colors that just radiates joy – bright, sweet, and completely unapologetic about it. And in the S/S 2008 Matelassé clutch, it gets even better. The quilting gives the pink this plush, pillowy depth, like the color is settling into every fold just to show off. Following yesterday’s bright bubblegum pop, today’s bloom brings a little warmth back into the garden. S/S 2004 Pumpkin (Orange) First is a Balenciaga shade that settles in and warms everything around it.🍊
On the First, Pumpkin truly shines — pewter hardware in tow — a color rich enough to feel intentional yet light enough to stay effortless. A rare magic trick for an orange to pull off. 🎩🪄
And another trick up Pumpkin’s sleeve: pair it with denim and you’ve basically got color‑theory flirting. The blue cools down, the orange heats up, and suddenly your arm is doing more chemistry than your high school lab ever managed. 🧡👖

Today’s bloom is F/W 2007 Grape (Violet) City, straight from a year that served some of the chewiest, most dimensional Bal leather ever made. This is where the palette finally wades into the deep end of the garden, and honestly… I’ve been waiting to sip this juice box all week. 🧃
And yes — this is the shade behind yesterday’s riddle: “Eat me for sweet dreams or wear me for fashion. What am I?”
Grapes come packed with natural melatonin — the built‑in cue your body uses to ease into sleep mode. 😴 It’s one of those quiet biological facts that feels almost poetic: a fruit that literally helps you wind down at night becomes the namesake for a color that feels equally soothing and moody.
The fashion half? That’s where grape‑skin leather steps in. The official term is Vegea™ — a next‑gen vegan leather made from leftover grape skins, seeds, and stems from the wine industry. It’s wine waste turned wearable, but not in a gimmicky way. Vegea has a soft, modern feel that designers love, and it’s already being shaped into handbags, shoes, and small accessories. A few labels are even experimenting with it for more structured silhouettes and sculptural pieces, proving it’s far more than a novelty material. Juicy in every sense. 🍷

This City comes from the era when Balenciaga was quietly rewriting the rules of color, texture, and attitude. And this particular one? She’s pristine — a time capsule, a cool breath of early‑2000s air drifting through the greenery. 🌬️
Most Seafoam bags from 2004 were finished with a matching turquoise‑leaning edge coat — a soft, tonal continuation of the leather itself. But this version belongs to the smaller, less common group finished with a brown edge coat — a warm, chocolate‑rich shade that melts into the Seafoam like mint chocolate, a little Thin Mint moment in leather form. My inner Girl Scout is rejoicing. 🌿

Yesterday’s clue hinted at a brightness stirring before anything was visible — a shade that seemed to move ahead of itself. And today, that flash finally steps into view: S/S 2008 Electric Blue Giant 21 (G21) Day, the cool‑toned jolt that doesn’t just join the palette… it changes the pace of the whole garden. 💙
This Electric Blue Day is a full‑on puddle of attitude — saturated, glossy, and deliciously unbothered about structure. It slouches, melts, and collapses in all the right ways, the kind of leather that looks best when it’s doing absolutely nothing except being itself. Paired with G21 hardware, the whole bag reads like a streak of color that refuses to sit quietly. It’s a bolt — in shade, in spirit, in silhouette.
